THE name of Sir James Mitchell is well known in Western Australia, but less is known, however, of his early service to the state throughout his long and productive public life.
Over the past few years, author Bruce Devenish has written his biography.
Titled Sir James Mitchell, Premier and Governor of Western Australia, the subject has been thoroughly researched and the copy is now with the printer.
Sir James Mitchell vigorously promoted the wheat industry in the first half of the 20th century and in his role as vice-regal representative was an icon as he was to be seen perambulating Perth streets, greeting all with a friendly chat.
The book was launched August 2 by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Wayne Martin at the South Perth Community Hall.
"I am sure that the people of this state will be interested in this first definitive biography of such an outstanding figure," Mr Devenish said.
Despite his lengthy and notable contribution to the people of WA, to this date Sir James Mitchell (1866-1951), has not been accorded recognition with a definitive biography.
"Here is an attempt to fill the void," Mr Devenish said.
"Sir James ranks alongside his contemporary and predecessor in office, Sir John Forrest, such that he has been described as the architect of agriculture in this state in the first half of the twentieth century."
Sir James was born in Bunbury and worked in the WA Bank which appointed him manager of the Northam branch in 1890. He was the member of Parliament for Northam from 1905, an electorate which had faith to return him to office for 32 consecutive years, being premier for two full terms.
Then, in the vice-regal position, which he held for 18 years he continued his love for all who would wish to go on to the land.
He died a month after leaving high office in 1951, having risen from rural beginnings to the highest level of government of the State, and the only WA politician to have been both premier and governor of the state.
The 216 pages of this volume includes 40 photographs, appendixes, bibliography, footnotes and a comprehensive index.
Governor, Malcolm McCusker, wrote a foreword. Author Bruce Devenish has a history degree from the University of Western Australia and is a member of the Royal Western Australian Historical Society, having been on the Readings and Publications Committee for 10 years.
His previously published works include Man of Energy and Compassion, the life, letters and times of Henry Trigg, Swan River pioneer and Church founder, (1996) and Como Baptist Church through 75 Years. (2006)
The present volume involved scouring of parliamentary debates and many publications, interviews with those who knew him personally and visiting relevant sites.
