THE 2014 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour arrived in York for the second time since 2011 on July 21.
A parade was held through the main street towards the York Town Hall which featured the Western Australia Police Pipe Band.
The visit was the first stop on a three and half month journey across Australia and New Zealand ahead of the 2014 Melbourne Cup Carnival.
York was one of 34 official destinations, picked from 70 applications in total.
Cup tour manager Joe McGrath said York had a very strong application.
"Coupled with a strong visit in 2011 which did help their case - we had a great time before so why not come back?" he said.
"The Melbourne Cup Tour has been running for about 12 years now and it's all about engaging with communities, because it is the people's race."
Mr McGrath said the tour allows people to hold the cup.
"It is an iconic trophy and people are always amazed to get up close to it," he said.
With Mr McGrath was legendary race caller, Bryan Martin OAM, ambassador of the tour, who is a veteran of 25 Melbourne Cup race calls.
Mr Martin had never been to York and admired the historical town's architecture.
"The internationalisation of the Melbourne Cup now is epic," he said.
"As a broadcaster you go into a cocoon about half an hour before the race and prepare for the unexpected.
"It is the pinnacle of your year and the final 250 metres is where it all comes together."
York deputy Shire president Mark Duperouzel was presented with a miniature Melbourne Cup and thanked Shire crew for co-ordinating the event.
"Also thanks to all who participated in the parade," he said.
"The numbers were pleasing to see."
