ON July 8, The Northam Library hosted author Linda J Bettenay.
Although it was a cold night, an enthusiastic crowd clustered in to enjoy her talk.
With a range of passionate readers, a few local authors and a sprinkling of inquisitive others, the conversation bubbled with locals taking the opportunity to learn more about the unbelievable story behind Bettenay's first book Secrets Mothers Keep.
In her presentation, Bettenay revealed how her husband Mike only recently discovered that his grandfather had been murdered and grandmother, mother and two aunts had been savagely assaulted and so unearthed a carefully kept secret that had existed in the family for over 80 years.
She also explained how she then researched the story, discovering strange links across the globe which assisted her to develop a complex set of extraordinary characters and bring this pioneering yarn to life.
This is all revealed in her book.
At the local author talk, Bettenay revealed the truth behind the murder and abuse within their family, was discovered in Denmark two years ago.
The rest of the story unravelled from that point.
"My visit to the Avon Valley has been a fabulous experience - with both Toodyay and Northam giving me a warm welcome," Bettenay said.
"Thanks so much to the Library staff for their organisation and to the locals who came along.'
"Sharing the joy behind my first book is a fulfilling experience and we intend to be back."
She hopes to return when her next book Wishes For Starlight is released.
