A PROJECT is under way to install retractable seating at Northam's Link Theatre.
The goal is to raise $120,000 within the next six months.
It is expected funding could come from various sources such as grants and sponsorship, together with revenue raised from theatre productions and other fund raising activities.
Northam Link Theatre sponsorship co-ordinator Wendy Richards said it had become evident the old seating no longer met safety requirements and it was necessary to replace it with more secure seating platforms and handrails.
"Comprehensive research reveals the ideal seating would include a retractable system which allows the whole unit to be rolled back against the back wall in order to set up the floor for other activities, such as dinner theatre shows," she said.
Previously, the Link Theatre held 100 patrons and it is expected in the future the new system would allow for up to 20 extra seats.
Measurements have been taken and several systems have been examined for suitability for the venue.
"A working group from Yongah Hill Detention Centre helped us to remove all the original seating platforms and prepared the area," Ms Richards said.
"The next step is to gain quotations and expert advice as to weight bearing loads and other technical requirements.
"This is a very exciting prospect, as well as a necessary step for the Northam Theatre Group to take." The Link Theatre has been Northam's premier venue for live theatre and entertainment, delighting audiences and developing local talent, for more than 100 years.
"We invite you to share in the growth of the Link," Ms Richards said.
"Become a sponsor of this project, and become a part of our history your name will be on our honour board in the foyer if you choose a gold, silver or bronze package or listed in our programs throughout the year if you become a grass roots sponsor."
