THE Northam Chamber of Commerce is holding a special general meeting on July 25.
Changes to its constitution and a name change will be under consideration.
President Paul Tomlinson said changes could reinvigorate the organisation to make it more contemporary. "Changes could give the chamber a rebirth," Mr Tomlinson said.
"Make it more inclusive and appealing to a wider range of businesses, not only retail, and target younger businesses with succession planning in mind."
A change of name, likely to be Northam Business Alliance, was the result of some feeling the Chamber of Commerce term was aged, he said.
"And that it represented an image more typical of past times with moustached, cigar-smoking senior gentlemen relaxing with port in hand reeling in leather chairs within smoke-filled wood panelled rooms," Mr Tomlinson said.
"The purpose of the meeting is a genuine, pro-active recommendation by the board recognising the need to embrace the future." The changes were only recommendations and the ultimate decision would lie with the majority of members, he said.
"We are always looking to strengthen our local stakeholders, be it the shire, government agencies, local politicians and not-for-profit community groups all for the betterment of Northam's economic and social future," Mr Tomlinson said.
