BRIDGETOWN-based music duo Steve Packer and Karen Hunt will perform in Northam next month.
Going by the name Short & Curly, they will play in Northam for the first time on July 19 at the Shamrock Hotel.
"We describe ourselves as country/blues/folk, and we bend and blend those styles to have one of our own," Packer said.
"Karen plays semi-acoustic guitar, I play harmonicas and we both sing.
"We play original songs as well as plenty of covers of artists, including Lucinda Williams, Paul Kelly, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Sheryl Crow, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee - even The Cure, in our own roots music way."
The pair first met 17 years ago in a community singing group in Sydney called the Kleftomaniacs.
They moved from Sydney to Bridgetown seven years ago.
"One of the reasons we chose Bridgetown was because of its lively music scene, and we started out playing at private jams, parties and pub open-mic sessions," Packer said.
"Feedback was encouraging and it wasn't long before we were getting gigs around the South west."
The pair wrote their first song in 2009 and recorded a CD of 11 original songs, Where Our Paths Cross, the following year.
"I write most of the lyrics, Karen writes the music and we work out the arrangements together," Mr Packer said.
"Things have really taken off in the last couple of years."
Packer said they found themselves on the road most weekends, heading for a pub, brewery, winery or festival.
They have done two tours to northern WA.
"Just about every venue we've played at has rebooked us several times, with 14 being the record so far," Packer said.
"We're not rock'n'roll, but we're lively, with plenty of variety in a repertoire that appeals to young and old."
