LAST week Northam Golf Club hosted the Avon Valley Ladies’ Golf Association Championship Tournament.
On Wednesday a fourball best ball par event sponsored by Northam District Glass (Peter and Wendy Richards) was held with 120 women participating in this event.
The winners for the day were Carlene Brookes and Delina Haywood from Goomalling with plus 10, the runners-up were Anthea Cousins and Kelly Brown from Quairading with plus nine, third place was Bobbie Baker and Jane Norrie from Pickering Brook with plus seven and fourth place went to Maxine Watts and Jane Murray from Beverley with plus seven.
Thursday and Friday were the championship days with fields of 80 plus players.
These days were sponsored by local businesses including Rak Electrics (Fran and John Rak), Avon Mower and Chainsaw (Max and Stephanie Hubble), Bendigo Bank, Avon Valley Nissan (Knipe family), an anonymous donor of $500 and Sports Power Northam (Fred and Jo Hill).
The winner of the championship (Helen Ward Memorial Cup) 36-hole gross winner (closed) was Sharon Richards of Quairading with a combined score for the two days of 168.
The runner-up from Northam was Grace Snooke with 171.
The winner of the bronze championship (Carol Comley Jug) 36-hole gross for handicaps 24-36 was Merle Manual from Bolgart with 191.
The runner-up was Jenni Knowles also from Bolgart with 198.
The winner of the Polly Whitfield Rose Bowl (closed) 36-holes nett was Shirley McLean from Pickering Brook with 140 and the runner-up was Merle Manual from Bolgart with 141.
The AVLGA championship (open) 36-hole gross was won by Sharon Richards of Quairading with 168 and the runner-up was Grace Snooke from Northam with 171.
The winner of the silver division (closed) 36-hole nett (0-23 handicap) was Shirley McLean from Pickering Brook with 140 and the runner-up was Grace Snooke with 145.
The winner of the bronze division (closed) 36-hole nett (24-36 handicap) was Merle Manual from Bolgart with 141 and the runner-up was Sara Minchin from Beverley with 142.
The best 18-hole open over Thursday and Friday was Sharon Richards from Quairading with 83.
The best 18-hole nett on Thursday (open) was Pam Meston with 69 nett and the runner-up on a countback was Toni Harken from Northam also with 69 nett on a countback from Julie Chester and Lorraine Watson.
The best 18-hole nett on Friday (open) was Genine Smith from Goomalling with 69 nett and the runner-up was Joy Hamilton from Bolgart with 70 nett.
The veterans’ trophy donated by Coralie Giblett was won by Joy Hamilton with 70 nett on a countback from runner-up Shirley McLean from Pickering Brook.
The teams gross event (closed) (Brenda Broun Shield) was won by Quairading.
The team included Sharon Richards, Barb Bond, Donna Hayes and Faye Minchin.
The teams nett event (closed) was won by Northam.
The team included Toni Harken, Grace Snooke, Wendy Richards and Vera Sheen.
The Northam Ladies’ Golf Club congratulated all the winners and thanked everyone for travelling to Northam and participating in the event.
It also thanked the Northam Country Club members who volunteered their time to help run this large event.
The ladies’ match committee also thanked Rob Sargeant for his help in the office over the three days.
