DESPITE low water levels the 2012 Avon Descent went off without a hitch, with the South African dominance of the event continuing for another year.
Paddling duo Hank McGregor and Grant van der Walt took out the double kayak class with a time of 10 hours and 18 minutes.
Fellow South Africans Hilary Pitchford and Abigail Adie were the first female pair to cross the line.
Father and son power dinghy duo Ian and Todd Wiliamson were the first to finish in their class, their fourth win in five Avon Descents.
The pair has competed as a team in 16 Avon Descents, with Ian achieving legend status after taking out the 2010 race when just three power boats managed to finish the course.
While there were few injuries, competitors were tested by exposed rocks and sand beds, forcing many to drag their crafts around places like Extracts Weir, which is normally one of the event’s most spectacular rapids.
