A RECENT standout graduate of WA College of Agriculture - Cunderdin is back helping educate another generation of students.
Head girl in 2011, Madison Davey from Wongan Hills, has been recruited by the college to run the piggery while a permanent member of staff is away on extended leave.
Madison received several awards during her time at the college and said she was pleased to have been offered the job and hoped it might be extended longer term.
Principal Bernard Beatty said the college had employed a number of recent graduates in the past and they had made a strong contribution to the education of current students.
"They develop good rapport with their students and are well respected by them," Mr Beatty said.
"Their ability to take on the role of trainer reflects well on the quality of the education we provide at Cunderdin."
Meanwhile, 50 Year 11 students and six staff returned this week from a two-week tour of the North West.
The annual tour travelled as far north as Broome.
Mr Beatty said the trip was to broaden students' knowledge of the pastoral, tropical agriculture and mining industries and alert them to career opportunities.
"Among those on the trip was an exchange student from France who literally stepped off the plane in Perth and on to the coach as it left for the trip north," he said.
At the end of last term, 52 students from Cunderdin took part in the Country Week sports carnival in Perth.
Country Week co-ordinator Paul Jasper said the college fielded teams in football, soccer, basketball and two in netball.
Students participated well but a long list of injuries meant they fell short of winning games by a few points, he said.
"It was tough fielding teams with top players unable to play due to injuries every day.
"Players in some sports were called on to plug holes in other teams.
"In particular, this affected the basketball team, half of which had played a game of football before their own game and lost by six points.
"Prospects were better for next year," Mr Jasper said.
"Players worthy of mention included Tyren Baum (Gnowellen), Matthew Flint (Northam), Brayden Curtin (Ongerup) in football and Lee Powell (Willetton) and Lewis Oetiker (Moorine Rock) in basketball.
"Jayden Applegate (Cadoux) and Dean Williams (Binnu) received nominations as state players in football," he said.
In the class department students are involved in a number of plant and animal growth studies as well as building a covered area for the aquaponics project.
