Twin Pines Polocrosse Carnival

29 Oct, 2009 10:11 AM
A FULL five fields were in action during an exciting polocrosse carnival held at Northam’s Equestrian Park over the weekend of September 19 an 20.

Thirty teams and about 200 horses participated in the tournament, arriving from around the State.

Clubs represented were: Kojonup, Walkaway, Perth, Foothills, South Midlands, Murray, Margaret River, Jesters Flats and Capel, most clubs nominating multiple teams across the different grades.

The action was fast and furious over the weekend with games played from E Grade through to A Grade - the higher the grade the faster and harder the game was played, with some real teeth clenching action during the A Grade games.

Saturday’s games were very competitive – teams had to play well in order to win through to Sunday’s finals games.

Local team Twin Pines members did a great job hosting the tournament, with Avon Valley Pony Club providing the catering to feed all those hungry mouths.

Twin Pines fielded two teams, one in C grade, and one in D grade, and there is always room for more as Twin Pines is always looking for new players.

Learner and young horse carnivals are held at the beginning of the year (March and April), and competitive carnivals are held in the second half of the year (July to November).

During the Polocrosse season, clubs take turns running events, starting with the northern-most clubs and working their way south.

There are also opportunities to be chosen to represent WA at a State level, with selectors attending certain events.

To have an opportunity to be chosen, riders need to nominate and attend those events.

Polocrosse is great family-oriented sport – with several teams boasting members from two or three generations.

Behind the scenes little kids were seen trotting around practising their racquet skills from the backs of patient fluffy ponies – the next generation of players to come.

Results of Sundays finals games:

E Grade: Perth (12) defeated Margaret River (5); Champion Pony - S Robillard.

D Grade: Capel (16) defeated Perth (6); Champion Pony – J Klein.

C Grade: Kojonup (12) defeated South Midlands (10); Champion Pony – E Crane.

B Grade: Kojonup (15) defeated Perth (10); Champion Pony – S Hall.

A Grade: South Midlands (24) defeated Perth (13) Champion Pony - S Hall.
