NORTHAM couple Roy and Kath Holtfreter celebrated 60 years of marriage on Thursday, February 18.
Roy first moved to Northam in May, 1945 and entered into a partnership with his father Maxwell Gordon Holtfreter as engineers at 139 Grey Street.
Kath moved to town when she was two years old.
The couple married in 1950 at St Mary’s Church of England in South Perth when Kath was 22.
Roy and Kath made their life and a successful business in Northam and raised two children.
Over the years Roy and Kath have been active community members.
Kath managed the Red Cross Blood Bank for many years and Roy has had continued involvement with local sporting and community organisations.
Roy has been an active member of the Northam and District Gun Club since 1953 and represented the State and Australia at various times in clay target shooting.
They sold the family business in the early 1990s.
Roy said the secret to a long and happy marriage was very simple.
“You have to be in love,” he said.
Kath said the reason she and Roy had been so happy over the years was because their personalities complimented each other’s.
“We have a very give and take relationship,” she said.
“We have very happy memories together and have lived a good life of travelling and being a part of the Northam community.”
Roy and Kath have two grandsons and one great granddaughter.
