FORMER Town of Northam councillor George Nuich was honoured when a park named after him was officially opened last Wednesday.
George Nuich Park is at Springfield Heights which was developed by his son-in-law Stan Malinowski.
Development began there in 1992 and the announcement that public open space there would be named after Mr Nuich was made in July 1995.
Mr Nuich had just retired from the Town of Northam after 28 years as a councillor.
He and his wife Hilda came to Northam from Bassendean in 1959 when he bought and expanded the town’s taxi business.
The family later began operating school buses and continues to do so today.
Mr Nuich was elected to council eight years after he arrived in Northam and served for 28 years under four Mayors – one of them Councillor Ray Head who is still on the shire.
He was at the ceremony at the park and was invited to speak by Shire President Cr Steve Pollard.
“George was a councillor who contributed and so was his wife Hilda who was on council with him during his last seven years,” Cr Head said.
Cr Pollard said the shire was committed to making the park a suitable venue.
Mr Nuich saw many of his aims for the Town of Northam realised.
“One of my first promises to the people if I got on council was to eliminate the ward system, because I felt councillors should be working for the good of the whole town and not any particular part of it,” he said back in 1995.
“The only other major goal that I hoped would be fulfilled was the amalgamation of the Shire and Town Councils.”
That was achieved 12 years after he retired from council.
