A LONG-RUNNING feud between two Northam families erupted into violence last Saturday night, with police reinforcements and the police helicopter called in.
The action was in Hutt Street.
Saturday night was just a part of four separate incidents as a result of which 18 people have been charged.
Most of these were remanded in custody and were due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Monday.
The weekend started with an altercation in the Boulevard on Thursday which resulted in one arrest being made and five summonses issued.
There was another blow-up at the Caltex roadhouse the same evening, resulting in more arrests.
On Friday a car was damaged and two more people were arrested and charged.
By Friday afternoon a strong police presence visited the corner of Newcastle Road and Hutt Street.
Saturday night was the big one and many Northam residents were curious at the police helicopter spotlighting part of the town.
People were fighting with knives, sticks, baseball bats, hockey sticks and tomahawks.
Molotov cocktails and other missiles were thrown at police as they tried to break up the fights.
Fortunately no police officers were injured.
Four more people were charged and another three on Sunday.
Charges laid included assault occasioning bodily harm, going armed in public to cause fear, disorderly conduct and possessing weapons.
Several move-on notices were also issued.
On Monday the officer-in-charge of Northam police station Senior Sergeant Nick Skinner said there had been an immediate police response to each incident.
“An inquiry team from the station is reviewing the incident and video footage taken,” he said.
“People are still being interviewed and I expect that more arrest will be made.”
The same families were involved at an incident at Red Rooster last year.
