New citizens take the oath on Oz Day

04 Feb, 2010 10:03 AM
SIX residents became Australian citizens at last week’s Australia Day breakfast held at Northam’s Bernard Park.

Maria Von Rensburg, Richard and Linda Stevens, Susan Noble, Carol Darwood and Neil Twigger all took the oath to become Australian citizens at the breakfast.

Favourite Australian classic songs filled the air as volunteers from the Northam Apex Club cranked up the barbecues to serve out free breakfast.

The ceremony was performed by Shire of Northam president Cr Steve Pollard and Member for the Agricultural Region, Jim Chown.

Belle Moore was awarded the Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award for her tireless community work.

She is a committee member and accredited volunteer with Avon Branch Seniors Recreational Council, delivers show schedules, collects and recycles items from schools, kindergartens and other children’s services.

Belle is committed to helping the environment and is secretary of the Northam Over-60s Group.

The Southern Brook Progress Association was awarded the Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award for a community group or event.

The association was commended for its plan for the centenary celebrations of the Southern Brook Hall.

Many hours were spent organising every aspect of the celebration and the day went off without a hitch.

Mic Brooke from RadioWest and Shire of Northam events co-ordinator and Visitor Centre manager Cory Gale compiled a list of the top 10 Australian songs voted by the residents of the Avon Valley.

Artists included Natalie Imbruglia, Grinspoon, John Farnham and the number one song “Land Down Under” by Men at Work.

Children enjoyed playing on the bouncy castle and getting their faces painted.
