Flooding caused by blocked drains

03 Feb, 2012 03:57 PM
IS IT any wonder there is flooding when drainage pipes and gutters are not maintained to a satisfactory standard?

As shown from the photos above, the Great Eastern Highway gutters and Jordi Road gutters have been allowed to scour out over a number of years to the extent that the extra heavy rain experienced recently totally blocked off the drainage pipe with leaf litter and general litter thrown from vehicles.

This particular site was reported two years ago as needing attention but somehow did not get that attention.

The afternoon following the storm the Main Roads maintenance team reported that there was too much water there for it to do anything but that it would attend to it as soon as possible.

As of Wednesday, January 25, no work had been done, as the photos show.

To the western end of Hooper Park is another drainage sump that is totally clogged with leaf litter which caused flooding and extensive soil wash through Hooper Park.

It is to be hoped that no heavy rains are forthcoming from the low pressure system forming in the north of the state.
