THE decision by the Northam Race Club two years ago to cut the distance of the Northam Gold Cup from 2200 metres to 1600 metres has been vindicated.
A full field of 16 greeted the starter – a far cry from the days when fields were only seven or eight.
And, according to club president Tony Marwick, Sunday’s field was the best in more than a decade.
A crowd estimated at more than 3000 people enjoyed fine conditions at the races.
For the first time off-course betting turnover was more than a million dollars, with $1.08 million being wagered.
Betting on-course totalled $225,000.
“We had good fields all day and the meeting was well-supported by the locals,” Mr Marwick said.
“There seems to be increasing support from local young people.
“Once again, Fashions in the Field was a great success and visitors say it is the best supported such event outside Perth.”
The cup itself was won by Jinx King ridden by Patrick Carbery and trained by Alan Matthews from Muchea who described it as a “working man’s horse”.
It was the third cup winner Mr Matthews has trained.
He donated his trophy to gravely ill club patron Pat Enright and it was taken to him by race caller Wes Cameron and master of ceremonies Warren McAulla.
Reports are that Pat was “stoked”.
Jockey Jarrad Joske fell in race six and had to be taken to Perth for further scans.
