21 Jan, 2010 02:28 PM
ON DECEMBER 29 a catastrophic bushfire raced through Toodyay destroying 3000 hectares and 38 homes – the worst bushfire destruction of property in Western Australia for 50 years.

To help raise funds for the Toodyay Bushfire Appeal, RadioWest together with the Avon Bridge Hotel is bringing Daryl Braithwaite to Northam for a special concert and all ticket profits will go to the appeal. Northam Volunteer Fire Brigade will also help with a sausage sizzle fundraiser with sausages donated by Quin's Gourmet Butchers.

The concert will be held on Saturday, February 6 with doors open at 6pm and Daryl Braithwaite on from 9pm at the Avon Bridge Hotel at 322 Fitzgerald Street Northam.

Tickets are $25 each pre-sale or $35 on the door (if available).

The event aims to help out in a small way Northam’s Avon Valley neighbours, Toodyay, and also bring some enjoyment to what has been, and will continue to be, a difficult time for many in the community.

Daryl first found fame as lead singer of Sherbet, a band synonymous with the 1970s.

The band’s accomplishments during its long career were many – including 20 national top 40 singles and being the first Australian band to top the $1 million mark in album sales in the country.

Their hit songs include Summer Love, the highest selling single of 1975, and Howzat, which was not only a hit in Australia, but also in England and America.

In November 1988 Daryl released the phenomenally successful album Edge, which spent more than a year in the national Aria chart, peaking at number one for several weeks.

In 1989 it became the highest selling CD in Sony Music Australia’s history, spawning five hit singles including One Summer, written by Daryl, which went on to achieve gold status.

In November 1990 Daryl released his follow-up album Rise.

Daryl again proved his talent with Rise boasting a further five hit singles.

The most popular was undoubtedly The Horses, holding the number one position on the national charts over three consecutive weeks.

The unexpected success of this single led to its being voted Australian Song of the year at the 1991 Australian Music Awards.

Daryl Braithwaite remains an integral part of the evolution and development of Australian popular music and a must-see live on stage.
