PERTH physiotherapist Jamie Wood has been awarded a prestigious Churchill Fellowship to travel overseas to learn from world leading experts about the treatment of bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis (CF).
Jamie works as a physiotherapist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and is part of the Lung Institute of WA’s CF and Bronchiectasis Research Unit.
Born in Wyalkatchem, Jamie went to primary school there before going to Aquinas College in Perth and then to university.
His family still lives in Wyalkatchem.
Jamie currently works with adults who have significantly reduced lung capacity because of their illness.
The specialised form of physiotherapy undertaken by Jamie enables individuals to optimise their lung function and enjoy a better quality of life.
Jamie will use his award to travel to London and Manchester, as well as to Sweden and Belgium, where his research will focus on learning more about airway clearance, exercise and nebuliser therapy.
In keeping with the ethos of the Churchill Trust award, Jamie plans to apply his newly acquired expertise to his work WA.
“My goal is to be able not only to apply what I have learnt myself, but to share the information with other clinicians and researchers here in Australia,” Jamie said.
“The Lung Institute of WA (LIWA) supported my application and I look forward to working with them upon my return to ensure I can share the benefits of this research opportunity with as many people as possible.”
The LIWA director Professor Phillip Thompson said all at the institute, and especially the CF and Bronchiectasis Unit to which Jamie belonged, were proud of his achievement.
“Jamie is a very deserving recipient of this award and it is encouraging to see the contribution that physiotherapy can make to individuals with lung disease being recognised in this way,” he said.
